Motivating Adult Learners with CBIT
If your employees are avoiding or attempting to short cut your training, maybe you should consider a different
way. Perhaps the training medium itself should be intrinsically motivating. Computer-Based Interactive Training
(CBIT) incorporates elements that hold the attention of adult learners and creates a deeper motivation for them to
use the system to its full potential.
Learning cannot take place if the learner’s attention is not captured and maintained. CBIT engages adult learners
with thought-provoking and interactive quizzes, case studies, scenarios, simulations, etc. In addition to being
highly motivating, these activities help build critical thinking and decision-making skills.
With CBIT, adults can receive immediate and specific feedback
to tests, pop quizzes, interactive simulations and
other practice sessions. Immediate feedback facilitates comprehension and provides a forward momentum that keeps
adult learners feeling motivated and rewarded through the training.

Adults need to know that what they are learning is applicable to their work or
other responsibilities. With CBIT,
training is customizable and, therefore, highly focused and relevant. When learners believe the information presented
is relevant to their success on the job, they will be more motivated and attentive throughout the training.
Most adults prefer to be self-directed. CBIT provides flexibility, which allows them to meet the needs of their demanding
schedules and particular learning style.

|
When adult learners have greater control of their own learning process,
they are much more motivated to complete the training.
|
When the training is motivating and
engaging, as with CBIT, it helps learners retain and recall the newly
acquired knowledge and, most importantly, transfer what they’ve learned to the job.
